Flexible working: “I am empowered and entrusted to work the pattern I need, to get the job done.”

Natasha Stoddart is a recruitment consultant working with part-qualified and transactional finance professionals in London. As a mother of two young children, she joined SRM Recruitment in 2022 after seeking a role that would allow her to work flexibly. Flexible working is something she is incredibly passionate about, so we spoke to Natasha about her experience of flexibility at SRM and if it’s lived up to her expectations.

Q: First of all, tell us a bit about your situation, why you joined SRM and why SRM’s flexible working appealed to you?

I am a mother to two young children. I was made redundant from a previous employer at the start of lockdown whilst pregnant with our second child! It can be quite daunting considering options and returning to work as a new mum. It felt like a lot to juggle, however, SRM recruitment made the transition back to work so smooth and straightforward. The main reason it works so well is the company has a flexible working policy, whereby I am not required to be sat at a desk from 8am-6pm, 5 days a week.

Instead, I work 4 days a week and get the work done. If I need to leave early for school pick up and then catch up on my work in the evening, that is not an issue. Without this flexible working it would have made it practically impossible for me to return to work, without feeling like I am constantly sacrificing the needs of my children.

Q: How has SRM’s model enabled you to balance work and home life?

I am empowered and entrusted to work the pattern I need, to get the job done. I am given support and the tools I need to do my job. There are so many statistics demonstrating the positive outcome of a workforce who feel entrusted – it has a direct positive impact on productivity and output. SRM operates a grown-up environment, the opposite of micromanagement! By being able to make time for family, work 4 days a week and work from home sometimes, I feel much more able to juggle all aspects of my life, which results in a healthy and happy employee.

Q: In your experience, in what way do you think SRM’s flexible working is different to what some other companies offer?

I have experience of working in other companies where the employees are put under pressure to hit KPI after KPI, it is frowned upon to leave work early, and working a 4 day a week would simply not be an option. It excludes people who need flexibility from the workplace, yet these people can have so much to offer and bring to the company. I recently saw an article by Forbes, which said that companies with greater gender and ethnic diversity consistently outperform the competition, so it makes great business sense for companies to offer more flexibility to their employees.

SRM certainly takes a forward-thinking approach and are the true definition of flexible. It is not a parent thing; it is a people thing. The people who work at SRM are given autonomy and if they need flexibility (however that may look) it is not an issue. No one is made to feel bad.

Some businesses still seem to think output is reliant on being in an office and at your desk 10 hours a day. However, visibility does not necessarily equal productivity. That is down to the type of people a company choose to hire. If a person is a self-starter and passionate about that job, they will be that person regardless of whether they are working from home or in an office. People do not work their hardest and their best non-stop for 10 hours a day. A study by Gallup found “highly engaged teams show 21% greater profitability” – if firms focused more on engagement and less on visibility, I’m sure they’d see some impressive results.

It is healthy to have balance, have a life, and come to work feeling passionate and energised for the work you do. I also appreciate the value SRM place on health; the company provide monthly small group personal training sessions. I know this is something other businesses may offer, however SRM offer this during working hours, which again makes it an inclusive activity.

Q: What do you think are the benefits of SRM’s truly flexible working model and why is it so successful?

Number one - it broadens the pool of people who can be employed by SRM. This means that SRM have the best people on the team, not just the ones who can be physically present all hours 5 days a week.
Number two – culture. This flexibility allows employees to live their lives, whilst succeeding at work. An empowered and engaged workforce show up with energy, passion and purpose. And having a happy and driven workforce makes a huge difference to company culture!

Here at SRM, we understand that life comes first. It’s important that our staff can find balance, which is why we operate a relaxed but grown-up environment and offer full flexibility so that people can shape the working day to suit them and their responsibilities away from the office. It’s just one of the many reasons why our people love working at SRM.

Chris Excell joins the SRM legal team in London

A massive welcome Chris Excell who joins SRM Recruitment to head up and establish our legal recruitment division. Chris tells us about his career to date, what appealed to him about working for SRM and his advice for candidate and clients.

Tell us about your career to date?

I think I can safely say I have achieved a huge amount in my career when it comes to legal recruitment, having worked in the industry for over 14 years now - I have seen it all! I have set up and developed legal desks within already established recruitment firms, I’ve worked solely as a head-hunter and I have also set up and run my own recruitment business in a previous life. I’ve been fortunate to have worked with a range of high calibre law firms, both specialist boutiques and global entities. In addition, I have gained significant experience in executive search business development, working on pitches and retainers. In my most recent role, I gained particular expertise in due diligence and pre-search analysis.

What prompted your move to SRM?

I was very excited by the opportunity to lead, build and develop the legal recruitment offering here. I’m incredibly passionate about law, and legal recruitment in particular. Everything in my career to date has developed naturally building on my experience from role to role, it feels like everything has been leading up to this opportunity which was too good to pass up. With my understanding of the market, this should be a really fun and challenging opportunity for both myself and the wider SRM offering.

What was it that appealed to you about working for SRM?

There are three reasons why SRM really appealed to me:

  • • Firstly, on a personal level, I was presented with such a magnificent opportunity to establish and lead the entire legal function, so how could I turn that down! Incredible, and I’m very excited to get started!
  • • Secondly, the recruitment model at SRM is similar to my very first recruitment firm. The natural crossover between law firms and other professional service industries, plus I understand how it needs to work to be a success. It’s a great model to work with.
  • • Thirdly, quite honestly, it’s the people. They are all genuinely a great bunch of people who are experts in their fields. I’ve also known Will Short for a few years both in a professional and personal capacity, and he only had great things to say about working here.

Tell us about yourself?

I’m a Northern boy, originally from Grimsby and I have a law degree from Lincoln University. I’m massively into my music and football (I’m a big Newcastle fan for my sins). I have also started to channel my inner Gordon Ramsey and try to master the art of cooking. I’ve lived in London for 14 years now, so I enjoy making the most of what the city has to offer. I definitely have a northern mentality – before my recruitment career and time at university, I worked in a fish factory (a rite of passage for any Grimbarian) - it really grounds you and gives you that edge to make a success in life.

What led you to specialise in legal roles?

After my law degree, I decided not to apply for a training contract. I didn’t want to start at the entry level – I am an ambitious individual and wanted to work with senior people early on in my career. Legal recruitment meant I could make a real difference, whilst giving me the opportunity to play a meaningful role working with world class law firms. I never actually envisaged a career in recruitment, but it was the best decision I have ever made. It is true what they say though about recruitment – the highs are incredible, but the lows can be tough. It’s important to build up a good brand for yourself, then your career will be more sustainable and enjoy longevity. I love the legal industry, so legal recruitment was a great fit for me.

Tell us about the roles you’ll be working on?

I’ll be recruiting across the full fee-earner market, from Associate up to Partner level, with a particular focus on the White Shoe US firms and top-tier UK law firms. On the in-house side, we’ll be recruiting for Senior Counsel roles and above both domestically and internationally.

What do hiring managers and job seekers like about working with you?

I like to think I’m personable and very approachable. I go into the detail with people. I’ll find out exactly why they need to hire someone and how this person will help take your business forward. With my knowledge and understanding of the market, I like to think I add real value with the relationships I have developed.

What’s your top piece of advice for hiring managers right now?

I can’t stress this enough; make sure you go through a thorough due diligence exercise during the search process. Sometimes hiring managers can be so focused on securing an individual, they miss the bigger picture of what this hire really would look like. Clients must conduct due diligence to the nth degree and don’t overlook any red flags – they are usually there for a reason.

What’s your top piece of advice for candidates right now?

Candidates need to be open and honest with recruiters. Remember, we are on your side so want to know everything that is happening with you so we can find the best role for you and your career circumstances. It also goes without saying, ensure you have prepared thoroughly and have a good understanding of the business before any conversations with firms. Do your research, know your clients, and have a bullet proof business plan.

The top ten reasons why you should work for SRM Recruitment

Richard Boyd
Richard Boyd, Director at SRM Recruitment, wanted to join an experienced recruitment team

Do you love recruitment but dislike the recruitment industry? We felt the same. That’s why we started SRM Recruitment. We felt the recruitment industry was increasingly focusing on process rather than consultancy.

At SRM you’ll have time for what really counts: your clients and candidates. If you love recruitment, rather than hands-on training of unqualified personnel, this is the business for you.

Because we don’t have KPIs, you’ll be the sort of person who thrives on taking ownership and opportunity.

It’s a grown-up business and we trust our consultants to recruit.

We also trust you to work in the way that suits you best.

It’s a real commitment to flexibility rather than a token paper policy.

“Joining an experienced team at SRM was key, especially working with a close-knit group of people who I knew viewed recruitment similarly to me – from a values, respect and way of working point of view.”

Richard Boyd, Director at SRM Recruitment

We are an established business with repeat clients and a strong foundation. That means we offer one of the best commission structures in the industry.

Transparency in the way we reward our consultants is critical. Each consultant can easily calculate what they will receive, there are no surprises.

In a team-based commission structure, you rarely get rewarded for YOUR success.

Clients say to us that they like our honesty and transparency, they trust us. They appreciate the advice we give, not solely our ability to deliver. Candidates say we are interested in them as people.

It’s a straightforward approach.

Richard Boyd

This week we’re delighted to welcome Richard Boyd to the SRM finance team. We talk to Richard about getting back to real recruitment, the roles he can help you with and his top piece of advice for hiring managers.

Richard Boyd

Tell us about your career and what prompted your move

“I worked at two of the world’s largest recruitment consultancies for 16 years, progressing to a Director-level role. Just before joining SRM, I led a team of fifteen focused on qualified finance recruitment. My remit grew to include executive search and specialist finance roles such as tax and treasury.

Getting back to real recruitment

Whilst I loved the role and had a great team, inevitably, mentoring and leading others became my focus. Over time I missed actual recruitment and spending time with clients! I like being out there with both clients and candidates and didn’t want to be as internally focused anymore.

I genuinely believe there is massive scope here at SRM to grow the size of our team and our footprint on the London finance market, so the scale of the opportunity and growth potential was key to the move.

An experienced team of recruiters

Joining an experienced team at SRM was key, especially working with a close-knit group of people who I knew viewed recruitment similarly to me – from a values, respect and way of working point of view.

I knew Stewart Robertson from school and he actually introduced me to my first role in recruitment. I worked for Andrew Setchell in Southampton and then London and  worked with Rory MacSween during my time in tax recruitment – during some pretty tough times after the financial crisis!

The benefits of a boutique recruitment firm

Working with a trusted advisor is even more important right now. What I’m seeing in the market is that people want to make a real connection and build a lasting, personal relationship. That’s something that a boutique firm excels at. I’m excited to be at SRM where we’re really focused on delivering a bespoke service based on your needs.

Tell us about the roles you’ll be working on

I’m primarily focused on permanent qualified finance roles in London and growing this business to better support our clients. I’ll also be focused on helping our clients with FD, CFO and Search level positions.

What do hiring managers and job seekers like about working with you?

I’d like to think I’m pretty straightforward. I’m definitely candid and my network appreciates that. I work hard for my clients and candidates and am passionate about finding people the right role.

Tell us about yourself?

I’m married and have a lovely five-year-old daughter so that keeps me pretty busy. Sporting wise; my main passion is road cycling, both watching and doing. I’m also a rugby and football fan. Hailing from the Westcountry I’m a big Plymouth Argyle fan (for my sins)! I’ve always had a really keen interest in American politics too.

What’s your top piece of advice for hiring managers right now?

Essentially: 1. be realistic 2. have a plan and 3. take advice

1. Focus on the key skills that will have the biggest impact on business objectives and you’ll find the right person more quickly. In a client-led market, we often think we’ll find the perfect person who can do everything perfectly but knowing exactly what you need and identifying core skills is a much more effective hiring strategy.

2. Have a clear plan for remote interviews and onboarding, work out your process and what you’re comfortable with. An efficient process is still really important to hire the best people.

3. Talk to your network or a trusted recruitment partner if you’re not sure whether your requirements are realistic or what sort of person will achieve the business transformation you’re looking for.”

Why work for SRM?

Andrew Setchell, CEO at SRM Recruitment
Andrew Setchell, CEO at SRM Recruitment
Andrew Setchell

Andrew Setchell, co-founder of SRM Recruitment shares his thoughts on why the firm is the ideal place for a recruiter to grow their career. Learn about the culture at SRM, our commission structure and 10 reasons to come and work for us.

Why work for SRM, if you’re a potential recruitment consultant?

We started SRM as we felt the recruitment industry was increasingly focusing on process rather than consultancy. Our belief has always been to listen and collaborate with our clients; building trust so they have confidence in our delivery.

It’s a very straightforward approach but one that has enabled us to attract an experienced and ambitious team of recruitment professionals who believe in doing things the right way.

Clear commission structure

Transparency in the way we reward our consultants is critical. At SRM we operate a very clear commission structure and it’s one of the best in the industry. Each consultant can easily calculate what they will receive, there are no surprises. In a team-based commission structure, you rarely get rewarded for your success.

Real flexibility

There’s a strong team ethic though and we listen and learn from each other. We take work seriously and we’re professional in all we say and do but life comes first and we shape the working day to suit us. Everyone needs balance and you’ll find yours here.

Celebrating success is important and we usually do that through team lunches rather than nights out – driven by what they desire to do. For example, we recently experienced Maos, the exclusive restaurant opened by Nuno Mendes, the Michelin starred Chef, and for our five year anniversary we celebrated in style enjoying a lovely afternoon sailing down the Thames on the tea barge.

Liz Hawkins, Principal Consultant

Run your own business

We expect everyone to operate their own part of the business and each SRM consultant is really motivated by that. Once consultants are given real freedom, they feel they have a stake in the business and their achievements become more rewarding.

Get back to real recruitment

We hire experienced consultants and support them day to day to build lasting relationships with clients and candidates. There are no outside distractions, everyone continues to learn from the team around them. Management at SRM is about mentoring, suggesting and leading, not hands-on training of unqualified personnel. You have time for what really counts: your clients and candidates.

Why work at SRM now, when the market is in flux?

We are an established business with repeat clients and a strong foundation. Clients say to me that they like our honesty and transparency, they trust us. They appreciate the advice we give, not solely our ability to deliver and that’s why we’ve been successful.

We focus on finance & accountancy and tax recruitment – all are doing well, including interim and temp. There’s huge scope for continued growth and expansion, both in our core teams, new disciplines and geographies. We want to hear from consultants who believe they deserve a broader market to succeed in, fewer operators, more clients.

We have discovered challenges such as Brexit don’t duly concern us; we are nimble and flexible, we work internationally, able to change tack and adapt quickly with continuous growth and success.

David Kingston, Business Director, Finance at SRM Recruitment
David Kingston, Business Director

Who does well at SRM?

Capable recruiters do well as they gain access to a much bigger market than they are used to, and it’s their own to develop. Those who bring positivity and want to be part of the SRM community will also enjoy working here. If you want to be rewarded for your efforts whilst working in a warm team atmosphere, this is the right place for you.

We are looking for consultants who are ready to take on individual responsibility as we don’t focus on KPIs, it’s more about achieving the broad objectives for your part of the business.

What are your aims for the business?

To keep building on our strong foundations. There really is scope to more than double our market and income over the next couple of years as we expand our core businesses and open offices in new regions.
